Pathfinder Camporee: September 27-29, 2024

Guidelines (update 8/28/24)

The Washington Conference would like to offer a Camporee to celebrate the BIG Camporee and an opportunity for clubs that could not participate in Gillette.

This will be the fifth Conference Camporee in Cascade Peaks!

The beauty of the surrounding mountains and the wide-open camping facilities make Cascade Peaks an awesome location for our Camporee.

We hope and pray for a safe and fun weekend as we worship and camp together as Pathfinders.

The following information will give you more details of what to expect before and during the event.

For any questions, please contact Gretel: youth@wc.npuc.org

COST

  • The fee for attending the Camporee is $15.00 per staff, guest, and pathfinders.  This cost includes 2 nights of tent camping, bathroom facilities, water and electric outlets on site, and a great time together!
  • If you plan on bringing an RV to the camporee and want hook-ups such as water and power, you will be required to pay an additional cost of $16.00 per night.
  • You will be able to tent camp or dry camp (RV without hook-ups) in an RV site and not pay the RV cost.

COOKING AND FIRES

  • Cascade Peaks currently doesn’t have an open flame restriction policy in place. This will allow the use of charcoal briquettes and campfires. No fire can be more than 3 feet high. It has to be on an above-ground fire pit.
  • Each club will provide their own meals.
  • Dishes are to be washed in basins at your campsite.
  • On Sabbath, I would recommend that you plan (if you choose so) to have sack lunches for lunch.  We have intentionally shortened the program to allow your club to enjoy the surrounding area.  This is only a recommendation.

ATTIRE

  • Class A uniforms for Sabbath morning inspection and morning worship.  BLACK SHOES ARE NOT REQUIRED.
  • Club field uniforms should be worn while hiking on and off-site and over the weekend.
  • Bring rain gear and a set of spare dry clothing in a plastic bag.

MISC. INFORMATION

  • Be sure to bring warm sleeping bags for those cold nights.
  • There are limited showers available within our camping area.  Additional showers are available throughout the Cascade Peaks campgrounds.
  • Coin-operated laundry facilities are available for use if needed.
  • There are plenty of picnic tables for our use at each campsite and surrounding area.
  • Camping sites are first come first serve.  We will have plenty of room to spread out.
  • Water is available at each campsite.
  • Bring your extension cord. Power will be available at every campsite.
  • Upon leaving, there is an RV dump station available for free.
  • There will be a small camp store for last-minute supplies.
  • BRING YOUR CHAIR

Sabbath morning is inspection. Be sure to bring your club banner, American flag, Pathfinder flag, and guidons. Let’s look sharp!

OFF / ON-SITE ACTIVITIES

  • Mt. Rainier National Park is open to the public at no cost on Sabbath.  Hiking and exploring in the park sounds like fun. No parking pass is required.
  • A Northwest Forest Pass (for forest lands only) will be required for each vehicle that is parked on forestland property. This would include all trailheads.
  • Explore Cascade Peaks campground roads and trails. Be aware of private sites.
  • For those of you who want to stay close to camp, the Cowlitz River is always a fun activity. Several trails lead to the river. The water is cold and fast in some areas. A lifeguard will not be available.
  • Remember to always have an adult staff member with the pathfinders on and off-site.

OFF-SITE ACTIVITIES OPTIONS

High Rock Lookout.  1.3 mile hike.
NW Forest Pass NOT required.  Perched atop a 600 foot cliff a retired fire lookout (removed) offers a view that you have to work for.  Enjoy views of the Sawtooth Ridge, Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Adams.  This hike is NOT an easy hike.

Layser Cave.  .25-mile hike.
NW Forest Pass NOT required.  A short hike takes you to the entrance of Layser Cave, one of the most significant archaeological sites in Western Washington.  This is an easy hike.  The trail may be brushy.

Woods Creek Watchable Wildlife.  1.5-mile hike.
NW Forest Pass Required.  Woods Creek Trail loops through five ecological areas with interpretive signs, offering hikers an opportunity to learn about diverse wildlife and their habitats.  The trail is a 4 foot wide compacted gravel surface.  This is an easy hike that all can enjoy.

Packwood Lake.  4.3-mile hike.
NW Forest Pass Required.  This is an easy hike that climbs gently through old-growth forest.  You will enjoy great views of Mt. Rainier.  Packwood Lake is spectacular.

Windy Ridge, Mt. St. Helens.
NW Forest Pass Required.  This 50-mile road trip should take you 1-1/2 hours to reach the Windy Ridge visitor center.  On a clear day you will see Mt. St. Helens and Spirit Lake, 41 years after the May 18, 1980 eruption.  If time permits this would be a great trip.

Mt. Rainier National Park.  (National Public Lands day FREE Entrance.)
Mt. Rainier’s Southeast entrance is only 17 miles from the campsite.  Ohanapecosh Grove of the Patriarchs trail is located just inside the park.  If time permits, a drive to Paradise and Reflection Lakes would be awesome.

September 28 IS A FREE DAY FOR THE NATIONAL PARKS.  ENJOY.
